After gaining of independence, Georgia has developed multidimensional relations with other countries. Within the context of these very relations Georgia has developed friendly ties with Turkey as well.  Some of the most important spheres of these relations are education, sports and others.

Within the scope of memorandum in the educational sphere president of Turkey, Suleyman Demirel has offered the Georgian president Eduard Shevardnadze to open a mutual higher educational institution in Georgia. The result of this initiative, International Black Sea University which was established in 1995 based on the resolution of Ministry of Education and Sciences of Georgia and Cabinet of Ministers of Georgia in 1995, which was initiated by the President of Georgia Eduard Shevardnadze and the Prime Minister of Turkey Tansu Chiller.
