08.08.2023

IBSU Rector Saffet Bayraktutan joined the Permanent Conference of Rectors and along with Vice Rector for Education Tamta Tskhovrebadze visited the Mukhatgverdi Brothers’ Cemetery to pay homage to the Georgian heroes who lost their lives in the 2008 Russia-Georgia war.

During the August war, the then Chairman of the IBSU Supervisory Board, Mesut Bozkır, cut short his vacation, returned to Georgia, and provided humanitarian aid to dozens of internally displaced persons (IDPs) for months. In 2008, IBSU sheltered IDPs, and organized and distributed basic necessities for them.

The August War claimed the lives of 170 Georgian defense ministry employees, 14 Georgian interior ministry employees, and 224 civilians. About 2,232 civilians and military personnel were wounded and injured. Over 192,000 people were forcibly displaced. Exiles number about 30,000.
