Project “Black Sea Region: Security Challenges and Opportunities” started

The Youth Atlantic Treaty Association of Georgia (YATA Georgia) and the International Relations Program of Black Sea University (IBSU) hosted the project – “Black Sea Region: Security Challenges and Opportunities”. Project started 21 May and held two meetings.

The project is opened by Mr. Giorgi Surmava, who was the former Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Ministry of Defence of Georgia. He also served on the National Security Council. Currently, Mr. George is engaged in scientific activities.  And Lieutenant Commander Papuna Davitaia is the Head of the Georgian Coast Guard Policy Division, visiting lecturer at the University of Georgia, Ph.D. student of TSU. In 2014-2019 he was Georgian Liason Officer of MIA to the NATO Allied Maritime Command.

Speakers spoke about the countries in the Black Sea region, their role and interests in the Black Sea. Also, the involvement of the EU and NATO in the security of the Black Sea region, in the context of Russia’s goals. In the end, they stressed the need for ports in Georgia, both in terms of economy and security and underlined the need to strengthen the defense.

We would like to remind you that the project “Black Sea Region: Security Challenges and Prospects” aims to raise awareness about the security of the Black Sea region. Project participants will receive information on both the Black Sea region and NATO’s role in Black Sea security.
