UN Resident Coordinator Niels Scott visited the International Black Sea University

On November 6, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia, Niels Scott visited the International Black Sea University, Mr. Scott was hosted by the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Mr. Scott was appointed as UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative for Georgia in September 2013. Prior to his assignment in Georgia, Mr. Scott has served as Chief of the Humanitarian Coordination Support Section for the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), based in Geneva. He also served as interim Head of OCHA’s Office in Côte d'Ivoire, Chief of Disaster and Vulnerability Policy Section, based in Geneva and as interim Head of Office in Haiti (2010 year).Niels was Operations Coordinator for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

In his speech, Mr. Scott focused on the topics that are most relevant to our country: the role of the UN in Georgia; Activities that are being implemented under the auspices of the United Nations; he discussed the education system, the programs and activities that can improve the system, also the challenges that Georgia faces today. He advised students to make best use of the governmental and social institutions in order to improve the situation in certain areas, for the protection of the human rights participate and to be involved in the building process of democratic system in Georgia.

The meeting took an interesting direction. During the discussion, the students used the opportunity and addressed Niels Scott with the questions concerning Georgia’s most pressing problems and current issues like: Human rights and security, its ways of solution and resolution issues; Improvement of education system; the need to carry out new reforms; the possibility of improving the economic situation and the country's foreign policy.

We hope that the cooperation between the UN Representation in Georgia and the International Black Sea University will continue within the framework of various projects in the near future.
